- by Dr. Gary Downing |
FEAR - it's really just a matter of perspective. What makes me afraid at night doesn't even faze me in the daylight. It's also a matter of focus. If I keep my eyes on a greater power, lesser problems cannot overcome me. So why am I afraid? Why are you afraid? Often, I get afraid when I am threatened with the loss of something important to me. Like someone I love and need very much. Like people's positive opinion of me. Like financial security. Like the loss of my virility as a man. Like my health. Like . . . the list goes on. What's your list of threats? I think my greatest, deepest fear sounds kinda' "squishy." It's the fear of a loss of love. I know I can handle a lot of what life dishes out. But I can be petrified by the possibility of love being taken away. I John 4:18 says: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear . . . " If I can keep my focus on the Source of love, maybe I can maintain a perspective on life that will allow me to live unafraid, despite the real threats that exist. "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is from the world." [I John 4:4] That gives me confidence, even faith, in the face of fear. To know that it is not up to me. It's like having a strong, bigger brother watching when the school yard bully started picking on me. "You better watch out 'cause my brother will 'whup' you if you hurt me!" What might it take to overcome your fears? Maybe it means committing your situation into the hands of the One who has overcome the world - and can guard you with His overpowering love.
