Whether you are using these devotionals as an individual or as a group, two important qualifications apply.

First, they represent just one man's thoughts and feelings.  These are meant to spur you to consider and communicate how you think and feel about the given topics.  I recommend you read these out loud (maybe taking turns, each one reading a paragraph unless you are uncomfortable reading out loud).  If you have a Bible handy you may want to read the passages surrounding the verses quoted to understand the context of the particular biblical idea.  Recognize that the purpose of these devotional is to help facilitate growth.  They are not designed for intense Bible studies nor for therapy support groups.

Second, each devotional includes questions to prompt your discussion and application of the key concepts I reflect on out of my experience.  It is more important to discuss what YOU think and feel than to decide if you agree with my written ideas.  You will be more effective if you try to listen to each other on two levels, both head and heart, intellectual and emotional, issues and experiences.  As you talk and listen "in stereo" you will find your communication deeper and more likely to contribute to growth both personally and spiritually.

Good group dynamics "rules" apply:  DON'T judge, probe, give advice or hog the time; DO listen for both facts and feelings, clarify what is being shared to make sure you understand, and pray for each other regularly.

As you begin to share your heart with others you will develop trust, deepen friendships and grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ.  If you are interested in a more specific spiritual discipline to further your growth through the development of a "covenant relationship," you might find my book, ONE MAN'S HEART, Dealing With the Masculine Spirit, a resource guide.  Please contact the church office if you are interested in obtaining a copy.

My prayer is that God will use these devotionals and your prayerful discussion of the thoughts and feelings raised to enhance your personal growth and deepen your intimacy with Jesus Christ.  God bless you as you share your heart!
